My Opinion: This was so great! I rented it thinking "Oh, well... it looks kind of dumb, but whatever." No way! Geoffrey Rush was AMAZING as the Marquis de Sade... playing a clever psycho to a perfection. He even has the best lines. "My best work filtered through the minds of the criminally insane. Who knows? They might improve it!" and "An entire religion based on an oxymoron" when being told about the Virgin Mary. Factional stuff about the Marquis filters into the movie, so it's not complete lie. Winslet expands beyond the weirdo in "Titanic." And Joaquin Phoenix! You liked him in "Gladiator?" It's nothing compared to his role as Abbe de Coulmier, the warden type, in this movie! The best performance of his ever. Michael Caine... grr! What a bastard. I wanted to kill him! The best parts are definitely the ironic ending and the Marquis de Sade's wit. A strange tale, but worth the time to rent and watch.
